Objectives: In this study, we wish to evaluate if it is feasible to introduce the PSMF (Protein-Sparing Modified Fast) in a primary care setting.
Methods: Patients enrolled in this pilot study will receive a handout outlining the PSMF diet with foods they can eat and portion sizes. The diet will include natural sources of proteins and vegetables. They will have their BMP and uric acid measured in 2 week intervals. They will follow up with a dietician at 1 month and have a follow up with their PCP at 3 months to have their waist circumference and body weight measured. Patient will be seen in 1 year to assess adherence with the diet.
This study will take place at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale Campus in an outpatient primary care setting.
Inclusion Criteria: All adult patients with a BMI > 30 interested in losing weight.
Exclusion Criteria: Patients with BMI < 30 or GFR < 60. Patients with diagnosis of CKD, arrhythmia, pregnancy. Patients with myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, acute decompensated heart failure, liver failure, malignancy, or major psychiatric illness. Finally, because some patients initiate the PSMF in preparation for bariatric surgery, patients will be excluded if expecting bariatric surgery within 6 weeks of starting the PSMF diet.
