J. Philip Karl PhD, RD is a Nutrition Physiologist in the Military Nutrition Division at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM). Dr. Karl began his current position in 2015 after obtaining a PhD in Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition from Tufts University where his research focused on interactions between diet, the gut microbiota, and human vitamin K nutriture. Dr. Karl’s current research aims to characterize how diet, stress and the gut microbiome interact to impact human physiology, and to identify nutritional strategies for leveraging the gut microbiome to improve health and performance. Additional areas of research include studying the effects of diet composition and stress on eating behavior, appetite, and health outcomes. Dr. Karl is active in the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) and the U.S. Department of Defense nutrition and microbiome communities, serving as Chair of the ASN Nutritional Microbiology RIS, as Chair of the Defense Health Program Joint Program Comittee-5 Nutrition and Dietary Supplements Working Group and as a steering committee member on the U.S. Department of Defense Tri-Service Microbiome Consortium.
