(P29-020-23) What’s New and What’s Next for the Automated Self-Administered 24-Hour Dietary Assessment Tool (ASA24)

Objectives: To describe enhancements to the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) freely available, web-based tool, the Automated Self-Administered 24-Hour Dietary Assessment Tool (ASA24, https://epi.grants.cancer.gov/asa24.html), which enables collection of auto-coded, self-administered 24-hour dietary recalls and/or single or multi-day food records.

Methods: Recent enhancements include: 1) a redesigned researcher website and 2) updated food code and nutrient values. Pending enhancements include: 1) improvements to the Spanish language version, 2) a new Sleep module codebook, and 3) linkages to novel datasets to estimate a) the degree of food processing (NOVA) in dietary intake and b) the carbon footprints of foods and beverages consumed (Database of Food Recall Impacts on the Environment for Nutrition and Dietary Studies (DataFRIENDS)).

Results: NCI consulted with a user experience expert and solicited feedback from researchers actively using ASA24 to inform the redesign of the researcher website, released in May 2022. The redesign improves navigation, facilitates study setup and respondent monitoring, and improves access to help functions. Post release, survey responses indicated that changes were well received. Released in August 2022, ASA24-2022 includes an updated food list, nutrients, food groups and supplements, based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2018 food and supplement databases. Enhancements anticipated to the Spanish language version in 2023 include revisions to the search function to accommodate accent marks and improved targeted English to Spanish translations. An updated Sleep module codebook with derived sleep variables (e.g., sleep onset, total sleep time) will also be released, and linkages between ASA24 and both NOVA and DataFRIENDS will be made publicly available.

Conclusions: Since ASA24 was released in 2009, researchers have collected almost 800,000 dietary recalls and food records. As of December 2022, 750 peer-reviewed publications describe studies that used ASA24 to collect dietary intake data. Based on researcher feedback and user testing, NCI continually enhances ASA24 to expand its utility to address evolving areas of research and increase overall functionality.
