Objectives: Energy and dietary quality are known to differ between weekdays and weekend days. Weekday temporal dietary patterns (TDPs) have been linked to health indicators in U.S. adults but the relationship of weekend day TDPs to health indicators is not known nor how the TDP membership may change from weekday to weekend day. The objective of this project was to determine the association between TDPs on weekday and weekend day and health indicators (body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and obesity) and their overlap of membership.

Methods: The weekday and weekend day 24-h dietary recall from 9,494 nonpregnant U.S. adults aged 20–65 years from the NHANES 2007–2018 were used to determine timing and amount of energy intake. Modified dynamic time warping and kernel k-means algorithm clustered participants into 4 TDPs. Multivariate regression models determined associations between TDPs and health indicators (BMI, waist circumference, and obesity), controlling for potential confounders, and adjusting for the survey design and multiple comparisons. The percentage of overlap in cluster membership between TDPs on weekday and weekend were also determined.

Results: TDPs on weekday and weekend showed that a TDP cluster with evenly spaced, energy balanced eating occasions had significantly lower BMI, waist circumference, and odds of obesity compared to other TDPs but 19.03-64.97% of participants maintained their TDPs between weekday and weekend day.

Conclusions: Both weekday and weekend day TDP were significantly associated with health indicators. Most U.S. adult’s TDPs were not consistent on weekdays and weekend days.
