(P24-114-23) Influence of Global and Leisure Physical Activity on Lipid Traits – The Health Survey of São Paulo With Focus on Nutrition, Brazil (2015 ISA-Nutrition)

Objectives: Physical activity (PA) influences cardiovascular risk through numerous mechanisms; yet, few studies focus on effects of PA on lipid traits and its interactions with other cardiovascular risk factors in the context of admixed populations. Thus, the study aimed at evaluating the association between PA and lipid traits in highly admixed population sample in São Paulo city, Brazil.

Methods: The sample included 901 healthy individuals aged ≥ 12 years, including information on sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics, anthropometric measures, biochemical exams, and genetic markers collected in the 2015 Health Survey of São Paulo with focus on Nutrition (2015 ISA-Nutrition). PA was assessed through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Serum lipid traits included non-HDL-c, LDL-c, HDL-c, LDL-c/HDL-c ratio, total cholesterol, VLDL-c, triglycerides (TAG), and non-HDL cholesterol. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression with stepwise approach and significance level of 0.05, using software R version 4.0.2.

Results: There were statistically significant negative associations of leisure PA (minutes/week) in relation VLDL-c (β=-0.00033) and TAG (β=-0.00157), controlled by sex, age, smoking, BMI, insulin resistance, MCP-1, blood pressure, and principal components of ancestry. Other lipid traits (HDL-c, LDL-c, non-HDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol) showed no statistically significant associations with PA. Principal components of ancestry presented considerable negative effects on lipid traits VLDL-c (β_PC1=-15.35 and β_PC2=-15.57 and β_PC2=-16.87).

Conclusions: The study showed significant associations of PA and non-modifiable risk factors in relation to VLDL-c and TAG. Public policy initiatives towards prevention of cardiovascular diseases should address strategies focusing on modifiable risk factors linked to cardiovascular risk, particularly among population groups marked by ancestry with higher genetic risk, considering their substantial impacts on life quality and life expectancy of the population.
