Sheila serves as a National Science Liaison for Nutrition and Food Safety at the National Institute of Food and Agriculture at the United States Department of Agriculture. In this role, she manages stakeholder relations on nutrition and food safety for the agency and is the founder and co-lead of the award-winning NIFA Nutrition Security Priority Team of more than 80 NIFA staff. Since January 2022, she has been on a joint detail with the Food and Nutrition Service advising on the department-wide effort to advance food and nutrition security and leverage the momentum of the historic White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. She also founded and chairs the US Global Change Research Program Climate Change and Human Health Interagency Work Group Climate Change, Food Systems, and Nutrition Security Workstream of more than 100 federal employees. She previously served as the Senior Advisor of Nutrition and Food Safety at USDA Office of the Chief Scientist (2017-2018), on detail from the National Institutes of Health (2012-2018). During her federal service, she helped put forth the first-of-its kind National Nutrition Research Roadmap and chaired a USDA Inter-Departmental Nutrition Workshop Series. Outside of federal service, Sheila was the lead author on the report examining options to strengthen federal nutrition reseach that secured the support of more than 80 organization and founded the award winning HER NOPREN COVID-19 Work Group that brought together more than 800 collaborators and published more than 40 publications in less than a year. Sheila received her B.S. in 2000 and J.D. in 2007, with a Certificate in Health Law from Loyola University Chicago and a Ph.D. in Integrative Biosciences/Nutritional Sciences from The Pennsylvania State University in 2004. Her post-doctoral training focused on urban and regional planning and public health nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her R.D.N. internship through a distance program at Iowa State University in 2018. She was admitted into the Illinois Bar in November 2007.
