(P02-011-23) Dietary, Lifestyle, and Medicinal Factors That Influence Nitric Oxide Production - A Review

Objectives: It is the aim of this paper to review the multiple Nitric Oxide-enhancing and Nitric Oxide-reducing factors that, ultimately, may positively or negatively influence health.

Methods: The data was collected through research that was done by peer-reviewed journals found on PubMed. Keywords including nitrate, nitrite, nitric oxide, nitric oxide production, nitrate reduction, and nitrate reductase, were used for search.

Results: High dietary intake of fructose and/or high-fructose-corn-syrup may increase the risk for cardiometabolic problems and endothelial dysfunction. Cruciferous vegetables may impair Nitric Oxide production and should be consumed at different times than nitrate-rich vegetables. Lifestyle factors including large supplemental intake of Conjugated Linoleic Acid and ascorbate, smoking, and using antiseptic mouthwash may reduce nitrate and nitrate concentrations and attenuate nitrate’s BP-lowering effect. Medicinal factors, including Proton Pump Inhibitors, antibiotic therapy, and Xanthine Oxidoreductase inhibitors may blunt nitrate’s BP-lowering effect.

On the other hand, some dietary, lifestyle, and medicinal factors may enhance health benefits associated with nitrate. A diet rich in citrus fruit and reducing agents and a lifestyle involving tongue brushing should be encouraged since they may improve endothelial function, increase nitrate-reducing potential, and enhance the BP-lowering effect. The drug TEMPOL (4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl) may have additional benefits in the cardiovascular system besides treating respiratory diseases.

Some factors, including ascorbate and alcohol, appear to have a dose-dependent effects on nitrate’s BP-lowering potential. While small doses of ascorbate and alcohol may be beneficial, large doses of ascorbate from supplemental intake or alcohol should be avoided.

Conclusions: In conclusion, enhancers of NO formation should be practiced or consumed with nitrate-rich food while inhibitors of that should be avoided to optimize the potential health benefits associated with the consumption of naturally occurring high nitrate foods. Dose-dependent factors, including ascorbate and alcohol, should be ingested in lower doses to prevent potential inhibitory effects on NO production.
