Objectives: Adolescence is the life-stage where nutrient intake does not meet requirements most prevalently. Situations of food insecurity present additional barriers to nutrient intake. Eggs represent an important source of 17 essential nutrients and are a low‐cost, widely available food that hold promise for enriching dietary intake among adolescents. Therefore, the objective was to determine the usual micronutrient intake among U.S. adolescents 14‐18 years by egg-rich diet and food security status.

Methods: Adolescents 14-18 years of the cross-sectional 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n=3,570) completed the U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module to classify household food security, and ≥1 24-hour dietary recalls. Dietary data from one 24-hour recall categorized participant level of egg-rich diet as not including eggs, eggs in mixed dishes or baked good, and primary egg dishes (including boiled, fried, baked egg, omelet, etc.). Usual nutrient intake distributions and the proportion of the population below the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) were derived using the National Cancer Institute method. Mean values and standard errors were estimated.

Results: Mean intakes of adolescents for both food secure and food insecure in all levels of egg-rich diets were below the EAR for calcium (979±8.3mg< EAR=1100 mg), choline (313.4±2.4mg < EAR=400-550mg), magnesium (281.5±1.8mg < EAR=300-340 mg), and vitamin D (4.9±0.05mg < EAR=10 mcg). The mean protein intake (78.8g±0.3g) was aligned with the Thrifty Food Plan recommendation (55-75g), but it was below the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (5 ½ oz eq ≈ 156g).

Conclusions: Nutrient gaps were prevalent among food secure and insecure adolescents. Future policies should focus on improving nutrient intake among adolescents.
