Objectives: The objective of this study protocol is to improve and personalize the energy balance equation and recommendations for weight maintenance (kcal/day).
Methods: Equations used to estimate energy balance (EB) are highly variable and impose a high degree of error. An EB INITIATIVE was implemented by convening experts: 1) to review common practices; 2) to develop and evaluate Expert Consensus Based (ECB) and Innovative Trial Based (ITB) recommendations; and, 3) to establish workshops and training opportunities to support a "Call to Action" for health professionals. Best methods to reduce prediction errors were identified. Two workshops were developed: 1) Energy Assessment and
Recommendations: (introducing a paradigm shift to focus on energy balance = weight maintenance) introducing new technology, methods, and innovations in the field; and, 2) Application and Skills Development ( weight maintenance and weight fluctuations as indicators)
Results: Two workshop were developed, each offering 4 CPEUs by CDR by the AND. The first workshop has been finalized and implemented . A major limitation has been the advertisement and recruitment of attendees ( ~20 attendees per session). The second workshop has been finalized and will be implemented and recorded on 5/13 followed by 4 scheduled workshops.
Conclusions: Attendees who complete the two workshops, recommended readings, quiz and case studies will receive an Energy Balance Certificate of Training (EB COT). They will be prepared to provide expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm to energize their practices and be empowered to be proactive in addressing consumer concerns, to improve the EB equation and share their accomplishments with others in our EB initiative at Annual Sharing EB workshops being planned.
Funding Sources: Currently, this project is funded only . by the St. Jeor Nutrition Associates, PLLC and the volunteer efforts of the experts involved. Breezing IDC, Diet ID and Accusplit provide support for their own products which are provided to the attendees at special cost. Based on our current success, we are currently looking for sponsorship and funding and will keep ASN advised of any changes in funding sources.
