Dr. Sachiko St. Jeor is the senior author of the Mifflin-St. Jeor Equation (MSJE), the predictive formula used to estimate Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) in the energy balance equation. She mentored Dr. Mark Mifflin, the first medical student in the Special Qualification In Nutrition (SQIN) Program at the Universiy of Nevada School of Medicine who won the First Place for Excellence in Clinical Research (Medical Student Division) and Best Paper in overall excellence in research at the National Student Research Forum in Galveston, Texas in 1988. The SQIN Program also was recognized when Dr. St. Jeor was honored as the recipient of the ASN Weisier Award for Excellenc in Medical/Dental Nutrition Education in 2007. As PI of the 10+ year study of the Relationships of Energy and Nutrition to Obesity (RENO)-Diet Heart Study funded by NIH ( RO1 HL34589), she led the interdisciplinary team to contribute to the understanding and definition of weight maintenance which underlies the approach and importance of their current work outlined here to improve and personalize the energy balance equation.
