(P26-020-23) Variability in Human Milk and Non-Milk Intake Estimation With Respect to Atmospheric Variation and Errors in Recording Sampling Time in Dose to Mother Technique

Objectives: Estimating variations in the water kinetics and human milk intake estimates in the two compartment stable isotopic Dose to Mother technique due assumptions of atmospheric temperature and humidity and imprecision in time of saliva sample collection.

Methods: Data simulation techniques were used to examine different temperature and humidity conditions for updating estimates of non-oral and non-milk water intake. Random error in timing of saliva sample collection was also simulated and the milk and non-milk intake estimates compared. Samples from secondary published data sources were used for examining intakes.

Results: For various locations under consideration, the mean of non-milk oral water intake varied between 24.6 and 53.3 g/day by varying temperature in the range of 22.3 to 32.7⁰C and relative humidity in the range of 42.2% to 75.2% representing the maximum span of indoor conditions at different geographical locations and seasons. The average error in measurement of breastmilk was ~200 (SD=50) g/day with error of 5 minutes in reporting time of saliva sampling.

Conclusions: Geographical region and seasonal variation in temperature and relative humidity should be considered in the calculation of non-milk oral intake in the dose to mother technique. Precision in time of saliva sample collection is important in the estimation of human milk intake by dose to mother technique.
