Mustafa Mahfuz is a clinician with an MPH, and a PhD in Pediatrics. He is currently working as a Scientist in the Nutrition Research Division of icddr,b. For the last 15 years of his research career at icddr,b, he has been working on different research projects on childhood stunting, severe acute malnutrition, environmental enteric dysfunction, malnutrition-infection interaction, aflatoxin exposure on undernutrition, and the effect of gut microbiota on childhood malnutrition. His key expertise is to perform large community-based intervention studies and longitudinal studies. Regarding his contribution to science, he tested an intervention package to reduce childhood stunting in urban slums, he examined the association between aflatoxin exposure and its association with childhood stunting and cognitive and language development, he has been working on identifying the biomarkers, histologic characterization, and pathophysiology of childhood and maternal Environmental Enteric Dysfunction. At present, he is leading a research project in the slums of Dhaka to develop a nutrition service delivery platform for pregnant women, adolescent girls, and under 2 years old children. He has so far published 144 scientific papers in peer-reviewed Journals.
