Objectives: Dysbiosis plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of metabolic disorders such as obesity, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. Synbiotics are a combination of prebiotics and probiotic that have synergistic health benefits. Synbiotics, through modification of the gut microbiota composition, can be an effective strategy for the management of dysbiosis-induced diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of 12 weeks of multispecies synbiotic supplementation on fasting blood sugar levels and anthropometric indices in adult men with dyslipidemia.

Methods: The study subjects included 56 Iranian men aged 25-60 with dyslipidemia and no history of diabetes who were randomly divided into two intervention and control groups. Fasting blood sugar level and anthropometric measurements, including weight, height, waist circumference, body mass index, body composition (percentage of body fat and visceral fat), food intake, and physical activity level, were determined at the beginning and 12 weeks after the start of the intervention.

Results: A total of 50 participants completed the study. At the beginning of the study, there were no differences between the two groups in fasting blood sugar level, body mass index, waist circumference, body composition, dietary intake, and physical activity level. The food intake and physical activity levels of both groups did not change significantly during the study. At the end of the study, the fasting blood sugar level of the intervention group decreased significantly (106.2 ± 15.1 mg/dl compared to 93.5 ± 14.4 at the beginning and end of the study, respectively, P =0.0001). However, no significant changes were observed in the control group (99.2 ± 14.9 mg/dl compared to 97.5 ± 14.7 mg/dl at the beginning and end of the study, respectively, P=0.26). In addition, at the end of the trial, no significant changes were observed in weight, waist circumference, body composition, and BMI in both group.

Conclusions: The results of this study indicated that 12 weeks of multispecies synbiotic supplementation significantly improved the glycemic status in adult men with dyslipidemia. However, this did not affect the anthropometric indices.
