Objectives: The rise of the obesity epidemic has led research to evaluate common health complications of inflammation and immunity as derived from obesity. Fruit and vegetable consumption have been extensively researched for their impact on a wide range of chronic diseases. Mango, known for its bioactive components, has been identified to yield health benefits for individuals with chronic diseases and their risk factors. However, research revolved around the mango fruit is limited, especially fresh mango. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of daily fresh mango consumption on immune and inflammation markers, and antioxidant enzymes in overweight or obese adults.

Methods: Utilizing a crossover design, 27 participants (11 females, 16 males, age 26.0 ± 8.1 years) consumed 100kcal of fresh mango or isocaloric low-fat cookies (LFC) daily for 12 weeks with a four-week washout in between. Blood samples were taken at baseline, week 4, and week 12 to analyze the levels of immune markers (CD4, CD8, CD3E, and CD45), inflammation marker (TNFa) and antioxidant enzymes (catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)).

Results: Catalase (P=0.035) and GPx (P=0.044) levels significantly increased following mango consumption after 12 weeks compared to baseline while no differences were observed with LFC consumption. There were no significant changes in circulating CD4, CD8, CD3E, CD45 or TNFa for either mango or low-fat cookie intervention.

Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that 12-week fresh mango consumption improved antioxidant enzyme activities without any changes on immune markers or inflammation. Future studies are warranted to investigate if larger doses of mango consumption can potentially contribute to immune function and inflammation, especially in individuals who have high inflammation or are immune compromised.
