Nurse Scientist

Dr. Mary McCarthy is the senior nurse scientist working in the Center for Nursing Science & Clinical Inquiry at Madigan Army Medical Center where she has been since 2005. She is a retired Army nurse with medical-surgical, emergency department, and critical care experience. She obtained her BSN from D’Youville College in Buffalo, NY, and her Masters in Physiological Nursing and PhD in Nursing Science from the University of Washington in Seattle. She received formal training in genetics at the NIH Summer Genetics Institute in 2009 and through Stanford University in 2020. She was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing in 2016, and the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) in 2020. She was recently appointed to the ASPEN Board of Directors having been a member of ASPEN for over 25 years, and an Associate Editor for the journal Nutrition in Clinical Practice for the past 5 years. She has received over 2.5 million dollars in research funding from the TriService Nursing Research Program and industry collaborators in the past 15 years. Her current research focuses on improving health behaviors by incorporating digital applications and precision nutrition strategies to impact cardiometabolic outcomes, military readiness, and wellness.
