Janet A. Novotny is a Research Physiologist with the USDA's Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center. Holding degrees in mathematics, nutrition, and biophysics, Dr. Novotny combines her areas of expertise to conduct clinical nutrition studies on diet and health. Dr. Novotny’s research is primarily focused on bioavailability and metabolism of dietary bioactives and their health-promoting actions in the body to reduce risk for chronic disease. Through highly controlled human intervention studies combined with technologies such as stable isotopes, mass spectrometry, and mathematical modeling, Dr. Novotny has published in areas such as absorption and utilization efficiency of carotenoids, glucosinolates/isothiocyanates, and flavonoids; dietary requirement for vitamins and minerals; and discrepancies in energy values and availability of macronutrients from tree nuts. Dr. Novotny also conducts human interventions targeting the role of diet in prevention of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.
