Dr. Marette received his PhD in physiology from Laval University and then completed a post-doctorat fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He is Professor of Medicine and researcher at the Heart and Lung Institute Hospital Center, and at the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods at Laval University. He holds a research Chair on the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
Dr. Marette is an international renowned expert on inflammatory and nutrient sensing mechanisms implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic diseases. He has made seminal contributions to our current understanding of metabolic inflammation and insulin resistance, and more recently on the key role of the microbiome in the development of the fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes. He is using both pre-clinical models of obesity, diabetes, liver and cardiac diseases, and also recently performed clinical trials with various microbiome modifiers to determine their impact on obesity, pre-diabetes and NAFLD.
His research work has been published in >310 papers, reviews and book chapters. He has served as Editor-in-Chief for the Am J Physiol: Endo & Metab. from 2016-2022 and has authored two books in the last few years. Dr. Marette has received several awards for his work including the prestigious Charles Best Award and Lectureship from the University of Toronto for his overall contribution to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field of diabetes.
