Taking an individualized approach to nutrition recommendations has been standard practice for optimizing athlete’s physical performance. Recently, the idea of precision sports nutrition has garnered much interest as a way forward for achieving higher degrees of personalization than current guidelines allow. Tools such as continuous glucose monitors and stable isotope methodologies, for example, have been suggested as methods to better individualize carbohydrate intake during exercise. However, there are many considerations and research needed before implementing these approaches. Please join the Sports Nutrition and Physical Activity GEM as we discuss this important topic with Dr. Gareth Wallis, Associate Professor and Head of Research, School of Sport, Exercise & Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham.
