(P02-002-23) Work Stress and Metabolic Syndrome Among Tertiary Institution Workers in Enugu Metropolis, Nigeria

Objectives: To assess work stress and metabolic syndrome among tertiary Institution workers in Enugu Metropolis.

Methods: As cross sectional design was used for the study. A total of 152 assumed healthy staff from three government tertiary Institution were recruited for the study. A pre-tested questionnaire was developed and used to generate information on the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of the subjects. Metabolic syndrome was determined by WHO criteria. Effort Reward Imbalance (ERI) questionnaire was used to assess work stress. Anthropometry, dietary diversification, physical activities and life style habits were determined using standard method. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data generated.

Results: The results showed that metabolic syndrome was found to be (68.23%) in male and (40 .76%) in female. The age range of the subject were between 25-70years. Comparing male to female, obesity (53.56vs 72.34), socioeconomic (73.85vs 34.86), Respondents (66.30vs 33.70%), HBP (60.24vs54.30%), Diet diversification (64.20vs 38.40). The results also showed that 44.2% respondents were academic staff while 55.80 are non-academic staff. In terms of stress, it was observed that 62.20% are highly committed, and 33.44% are moderately committed while 8.62% were moderately stressed and 91.38% were highly stressed.

Conclusions: Conclusively, there is high level of stress among the subjects. Using WHO criteria for metabolic syndrome, more than half of the male subjects had metabolic syndrome while more than one third of the female had metabolic syndrome. Work stress was associated with increased risk of metabolic syndromes.
