(P02-012-23) Association of Serum Uric Acid With Metabolic Syndrome and Its Components in a Rural Hypertensive Population in China

Objectives: Insulin resistance (IR) is the central link of metabolic syndrome (MetS). MetS can be used as a means to evaluate IR, and elevated uric acid (UA) is related to IR. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between UA and MetS in a rural hypertensive population.

Methods: In total, 4,464 participants aged between 40 and 75 years were enrolled in the present study. We used the International Diabetes Federation definition to define MetS. Hyperuricemia was defined as UA >420 μmol/L for men and >360 μmol/L for women.

Results: The prevalence rates of hyperuricemia and MetS were 12.7% and 46.4%, respectively. The prevalence of MetS increased with the increase in UA levels. After adjustment for related risk factors, each 10 μmmol/L increment in serum uric acid (SUA) concentration was significantly associated with a 4.7% increased risk of MetS in men and a 6.5% increased risk of MetS in women. Increased UA was associated with MetS in men and women [odds ratio (OR)=2.62, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.77–3.87, p< 0.01; OR=2.62, 95% CI 2.04–3.39, p< 0.01, respectively] when comparing the fourth vs. first quartile after adjustment for age, body mass index (BMI), creatinine, smoking history, drinking history, stroke history, and heart disease history.

Conclusions: SUA positively correlates with MetS in hypertensive patients in rural China, and this relationship shows gender differences.
