Objectives: Nutraceuticals and food-based interventions are a growing trend among consumers and are also becoming increasingly popular within the field of dermatology. Studies in recent years have shown that high vegetable and fruit intake may offer benefit for concerns around skin aging.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of mango intake on skin health and appearance in postmenopausal women, in addition to other parameters of health including blood pressure.

Methods: A randomized controlled open-label study was conducted from October 2021 to March 2023. Fifty-three post-menopausal women between the ages of 50-70 years old and with a Fitzpatrick skin type of I, II, or III were enrolled. These participants were randomized to either consume 85g (0.5 cup) of fresh-frozen Ataulfo mangos 4 times per week for 20 weeks, or to a control group (no mango intake). Participants were evaluated at baseline, 10 weeks, 20 weeks. Those in the mango group were also evaluated at 24 weeks. Endpoints included facial fine lines and wrinkles, skin hydration, sebum production, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure.

Results: No significant changes were observed within or between groups for percent change in hydration, percent change in sebum, or percent change in systolic blood pressure. There was a trend for a decrease in diastolic blood pressure for the mango group at week 24, with a 13.7% reduction (p=0.07). Changes in fine lines and wrinkles were assessed for wrinkle severity (depth and length).

Conclusions: Consumption of 85g of mangos 4 times per week for 20 weeks in postmenopausal women may offer health benefits, as seen by a trend for decreased diastolic blood pressure. Further research and further analysis of our data and will be needed to determine the effects of mango intake in postmenopausal women on skin hydration, sebum, and fine lines and wrinkles.
