(P06-009-23) Child Undernutrition in India: Data Visualization and Product Development

Objectives: Comparative analysis of National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3 and NFHS-5) data indicates that stunting (14.5%) wasting (6.7%) and being underweight (10.4%) reduction is very low in the last 15 years in India. Government programs generally provide supplements, and hot-cooked meals along with proper guidance to caregivers in order to make an impact. But, dietary habits and undernutrition scenario is extremely different region-wise. Therefore, appropriate data analysis and visualization techniques can help policymakers design geographical strategies in order to combat child undernutrition. Additionally, there is a need to develop a product that works as “One Solution that fits all”. The product should be able to provide macro and micronutrients to deal with protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency without changing their dietary habits.

Methods: Undernutrition indicators have been analyzed at 3 levels; Country, state, and district. Various socio-economic parameters affecting child undernutrition have been accessed as well. Point-of-use fortification was deemed to be an effective and safe strategy to reach the population at large. Food-based vegan sprinkler formulation has been developed from local vegan food ingredients that can be used as an add-on to any home-cooked recipe. 

Results: This sprinkler has an excellent amount of macronutrients, minerals, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, fibers, antioxidants, choline, etc. to fulfill the nutritional requirements of children between the ages of 1 to 3 years as per RDA. Real-time and accelerated shelf life study indicates that the sprinkler complies with safety and efficacy standards set by the food safety and standard Authority of India (FSSAI). Since the sprinkler is plant-based; antinutrient reduction strategies have been successfully applied. In Vitro, bioavailability studies are going on to understand the impact of antinutrient reduction on the %bioavailability of minerals and essential amino acids.

Conclusions: Understanding data, Region-specific strategy planning, and appropriate product development can altogether create and impact on reducing child undernutrition in India. The sprinkler will provide bioavailable nutrients to vulnerable children while keeping their dietary preferences in an easy and affordable manner.
