Objectives: This study aims to investigate whether Capsicum annuum L. cv. Dangjo (DJ) affects to the glucose metabolism in oral glucose challenge test.

Methods: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel trial, 88 healthy subjects were randomly assigned to the placebo and test groups and received placebo and freeze-dried DJ (7 g/day), respectively, for 4 weeks. The blood glucose and insulin levels were measured at 0, 30, 60, 120, and 180 min after the meal, and the increase in the incremental area under the curve (iAUC) was determined.

Results: The blood glucose response was significantly decreased after 60 min in the test group compared to that in the placebo group (p = 0.021). In addition, glucose levels decreased at iAUC 30-60 min (p = 0.097) and 30-120 min (p = 0.093) in the test group; however, there was no marked difference in insulin levels. According to the QUalitative INteraction Trees, subjects who were consumed more carbohydrate ( >211.5 and 176.5 g) tended to decrease blood insulin levels at iAUC 0-30 min (p = 0.098) and 30-60 min (p = 0.073) in DJ group. In terms of subjects who had higher fasting insulin level ( >6.1 μU/mL) significantly decreased blood insulin at iAUC 0-60 min (p = 0.018).

Conclusions: In conclusion, consumption of DJ can prevent against glucose-induced hyperglycemia and, therefore, may help in suppressing increase of postprandial blood glucose levels.
