(P06-041-23) A Dietary Supplement and Intermittent Fasting Program Improves Cardiometabolic Health Outcomes and Mental Well-Being in Healthy Men and Women

Objectives: This study evaluated changes in cardiometabolic health outcomes and well-being among participants following a dietary supplementation and intermittent fasting protocol for 60 days.

Methods: This study was an open-label, single-arm interventional study of 37 healthy men and women, ages 20-65 years, who followed a dietary supplementation program for 60 days. The program is constructed with two supplements: a yerba mate-based supplement (Unimate®), consumed once in the morning, and a fiber supplement (Balance), consumed twice per day before lunch and dinner. In addition, participants fasted overnight for 12-16 hours throughout the 60 days. Assessments conducted at Days 0 and 60 included body weight, waist circumference, blood lipid levels (cholesterol profile and triglycerides), and percent hemoglobin A1c (% HbA1c). A validated assessment, the Scale for Positive and Negative Experience (SPANE), was completed at Days 0, 30, and 60 to assess changes in well-being (positive and negative feelings, overall affect balance). Appropriate statistical methodology was applied (paired t-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, or repeated measures ANOVA with Dunnett’s test) and significance was set as P < 0.05.

Results: Total cholesterol, non-HDL and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and % HbA1c were all significantly reduced at Day 60 (-5.7%, -7.4%, -7.6%, -9.0%, and -1.3%, respectively; all P < 0.05). Meanwhile, mean body weight and waist circumference decreased by 1.1% and 2.0% (both P < 0.01), respectively, from Day 0 to 60. SPANE Positive Feelings scores increased by 16% and 18% (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01) and Negative Feelings scores decreased by 20% and 18% (P < 0.001 and P < 0.0001), at Days 30 and 60, respectively.

Conclusions: The comprehensive 60-day lifestyle intervention demonstrated the potential to enhance overall cardiometabolic health and quality of life in generally healthy adults without chronic disease. Thus, this dietary supplement program can be an alternative approach for adults seeking to improve cardiometabolic health and psychological well-being.
