(P07-013-23) Postnatal Consumption of Black Bean Powder Protects Against Obesity and Dyslipidemia in Male Adult Rat Offspring From Obese Pregnancies

Objectives: To examine if postnatal consumption of a black bean powder (BBP)-supplemented diet protects against metabolic malprogramming in offspring from obese mothers.

Methods: Male offspring (n=10/group) from obese mothers (OB) were weaned onto a standard postnatal control diet alone (OB-CON) or supplemented with black bean powder (OB-BBP) until adulthood (postnatal day 120). Aged matched male offspring from lean mothers (LN) fed a postnatal control diet served as a normal reference group (LN-CON, n=10). Postnatal diets were matched for macronutrient content as were similar in energy (3.82 and 3.51 kcal/g for OB-CON and OB-BBP, respectively). Body weight (BW) and metabolic outcomes, including blood lipids [total cholesterol (C), LDL-C, and HDL-C] and glycemic control (glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR) were assessed in adulthood.

Results: Adult offspring from obese mothers (OB-CON) had a higher (p < 0.05) body weight (682.12 ± 10.67 g) compared to that of offspring from lean mothers (LN-CON, 616.12 ± 12.81 g). However, postnatal consumption of BBP (OB-BBP) resulted in the normalization of body weight (605.43 ± 13.84 g) similar to LN-CON offspring. Compared with LN-CON offspring, OB-CON offspring had significantly higher (p < 0.05) serum total-C (186.61 ± 8.76 vs. 156.25 ± 8.31 mg/dL) and HDL-C (122.01 ± 10.26 vs. 98.95 ± 10.92 mg/dL). Offspring consuming a postnatal diet supplemented with BBP (OB-BBP) had significantly lower (p < 0.05) total-C (120.08 ± 9.14 mg/dL) and HDL-C (59.92 ± 5.74 mg/dL) compared to both LN-CON and OB-CON offspring. However, no significant changes in LDL-C or glycemic control endpoints were observed between the different treatment groups.

Conclusions: Our results suggest that postnatal consumption of a black bean powder supplemented diet may protect male offspring against the programming of obesity and dyslipidemia associated with maternal obesity.
