(P07-061-23) Dietary Intake in Toddlers Attending Private Pediatric Clinics in the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara, Mexico

Objectives: To evaluate if the dietary intake is inadequate in toddlers aged 12-24 months who attend the private pediatric clinic in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara.

Methods: Analytic cross-sectional study that included 101 healthy, full-term toddlers aged 12 to 24 months, with normal birth weight who attended a private pediatric clinic in the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara, between January 2020 and January 2021. Two 24-hour dietary recalls were applied (among the week and on the weekend). The person or person on charge was asked about all the foods and drinks consumed by toddlers in the previous 24 hours. The Chi-Square test and Odds ratio were used to identify the probability of excessive and/or deficient intake with a p value under 0.05.

Results: During the week, there was a higher probability of excessive energy intake in males vs. females [OR= 5.5 (CI 95% 1.4, 20.8), p=0.003]. Likewise, on a weekend insufficient energy intake was more frequent in females vs. males [OR= 2.5 (CI 95% 1.1, 5.7), p= 0.03]. Most of toddlers had excessive protein intake and the frequency was similar in females and males; 31% of toddlers had insufficient fat intake and the frequency was similar in females vs. males. Most of toddlers had insufficient cholesterol intake, more frequent in females vs. males [OR= 3.03 (CI 95% 1.2, 7.1), p= 0.010]. On a weekend, excessive protein intake was similar to weekday in females and males. There was also insufficient fat intake in both females and males. Cholesterol intake was insufficient in most toddlers in both sexes. Most toddlers had insufficient fiber intake, both during the week and at the weekend, more marked in females than males [OR= 3.1 (CI 95% 1.2, 7.8), p= 0.014]. During the week, 46% of toddlers had excessive intake of added sugars; it was more frequent in females than in males. While on a weekend day, 29% of toddlers had and excessive intake of sugars, similar in both sexes.

Conclusions: The ingestion of energy and protein is excessive in toddlers, especially in males; the excessive ingestion of sugars is greater in females than in males. The intake of fat, cholesterol and fiber is insufficient and lower in females than in males.
