(P07-069-23) Associations of Ferritin Related Dietary Pattern With Vitamin D and Iron-based Biomarkers Among Pregnant Women - A Cross-sectional Study

Objectives: To identify the dietary pattern (DP) using hemoglobin (Hb), iron (Fe), and ferritin (Fr) as responses with 32 food group predictors, and study the associations of DP with iron and vitamin D related biomarkers.

Methods: In the cross-sectional study, a total of 1502 pregnant women (aged > 15 years) were examined using the National Nutrition and Health Survey Data (2017-2019) in Taiwan. Dietary intake was assessed by food frequency questionnaire and 24-hour dietary recall. Dietary pattern was analyzed by a reduced rank regression model. Linear regression and multinomial logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate the associations between DP and iron and vitamin D biomarkers. Demographic data and dietary intake were used as adjustment factors.

Results: Ferritin related dietary pattern (FrDP) explained a total variance of 8.46%. The FrDP was characterized by high intakes of 100% pure fruits and vegetable juices, eggs, processed meat and meat pulp, pickled vegetables, and carrot, roots, and tubers. The FrDP was positively correlated with Fr (r = 0.92), Hb (r = 0.83), and Fe (r = 0.77). After full adjustments, linear regression analysis showed positive associations of FrDP with Hb and Fe, but a negative association of FrDP with vitamin D status. Pregnant women in the highest tertile (T3) of FrDP were likely to have increased odds of total iron binding capacity insufficiency (OR = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.03, 2.08) and vitamin D deficiency (OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.20, 2.23).

Conclusions: This study finds an inverse association of FrDP with vitamin D status. Pregnant women who consume FrDP are associated with an increased risk for vitamin D deficiency status.
