Objectives: The Dietary Guidelines for American’s recommendations for alcohol are essential for educating and empowering adult consumers to make responsible decisions about drinking. Health and nutrition experts play an important role in informing consumers and influencing behavior. This session will highlight the latest scientific evidence around alcohol and health along with the standards for alcohol in the context of a healthy lifestyle for adults.

Methods: This session will feature consumer data that demonstrates gaps in knowledge around Dietary Guidelines for alcohol; will review current recommendations for alcohol; and will showcase tools and resources that will help consumers make responsible alcohol decisions.

Results: The recommendations for moderate consumption of alcohol have been included in every edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans since 1980, and these recommendations have been developed and re-affirmed over the years based on the preponderance of evidence. The body of research around alcohol and health continues to grow and evolve, underscoring the importance of ongoing review of the science. A key example is the 2022 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study reversal of the 2018 GBD conclusion that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption. This session will also present 2022 data from a national survey of 2,000 U.S. adults that demonstrates gaps in consumer knowledge surrounding moderate drinking, the ABV (alcohol by volume), and standard drink equivalents.

Conclusions: The consumer data presented in this session, in the context of the current alcohol research landscape and guidance, can help health and nutrition professionals assist their patients in understanding alcohol labeling and the importance of drinking responsibly.
