(P11-023-23) Inflammatory Biomarkers and Lipid Profile Are Associated With Plasma Alfa-Tocopherol Deficiency in Adolescents – The Health Survey of São Paulo With Focus on Nutrition

Objectives: The study’s objective was to evaluate the association among lipid profiles, inflammatory biomarkers, and plasma vitamin E deficiency in adolescents in the urban area of Sao Paulo.

Methods: Data from 265 individuals between 14 and 18 were obtained from the 2015 Health Survey of Sao Paulo, a cross-sectional study focusing on Nutrition (ISA-Nutrition). Plasmatic vitamin E concentration was assessed and classified as deficiency with values < 12 μmol/L. Blood samples were analyzed to obtain plasma lipid profile (non-HDL-c, LDL-c, HDL-c, total cholesterol, VLDL-c, and TAG) and inflammatory biomarkers (hepcidin, leptin, adiponectin, CRP, TNF-α, MCP-1, IL-1 β, IL-6, and IL-10). Associations of serum vitamin E deficiency about inflammatory biomarkers and lipid profiles were analyzed using logistic regression. The model was controlled for sex and Body Mass Index/age.

Results: Plasma vitamin E deficiency was present in 35% of the adolescents; 52.1% were female, and 26.4% were overweight. Adolescents in the 2^nd (OR: 3.59, 95% CI: 1.72-7.75, p< 0.001) and 3^rd (OR: 2.64, 95% CI: 1.24-5.74, 0=0. 012) terciles of hepcidin concentration were more likely to have vitamin E deficiency; as were adolescents in the second (OR: 2.42, 95%CI: 1.15-5.19, p=0.020) and third (OR: 2.85, 95%CI: 1.34-6.21, p=0.006) terciles of IL-1 β concentration. Regarding lipid profile, there was an inverse association between vitamin E deficiency and total cholesterol (OR: 0.13, 95%CI: 0.03-0.35, p< 0.001).

Conclusions: The findings indicate that plasma deficiency of a-tocopherol was associated with higher inflammatory biomarkers and lower total cholesterol concentration. Public policies should address preventive strategies for vitamin E deficiency, considering the higher risk for inflammation and cardiometabolic diseases.
