Objectives: Our objectives were to obtain information about dietary habits and nutritional status of Mexican pediatric patients newly diagnosed Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and to evaluate their association.

Methods: A retrospective study included patient records from the Nutrition Unit of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology of the Nuevo Hospital Civil de Guadalajara “Dr. Juan I. Menchaca” from 2013-2020; children and adolescents aged 2-18 years recently diagnosed with ALL were included. Food frequency questionnaires were compared with Mexican dietary guidelines, and antropometric data were analyzed with WHO’s software Anthro and AnthroPlus to determine their nutritional status. A correlation matrix was made using the Spearman test.

Results: From 258 patients, 155 were eligible with ALL diagnosis, and 142 met the selection criteria. Nutritional assessment showed 17.1% were overweight. Vegetable consumption (r=-0.178, p≤0.05) showed a negative correlation to BMI/Age Z-score, while grains (r=0.233, p≤0.01) and fat intake (r=0.211, p≤0.05) showed a positive correlation.

Conclusions: Poor eating habits and malnutrition can contribute to lower survival rates of cancer patients in Mexico. Low vegetables and high grain and fat intake among pediatric patients with ALL, showed a negative influence on BMI/Age Z-score at diagnosis, emphasizing the need for nutrition monitoring and early nutrition education to avert nutritional problems during and after cancer treatment to improve clinical outcomes.
