(P14-072-23) NAMETI-Alcohol Pilot Clinical Trial To Compare the Effects of Abstention and the Mediterranean Alcohol Drinking Pattern: Preliminary Results of Adherence

Objectives: The NAMETI-Alcohol clinical trial is a novel intervention study designed to provide quality scientific evidence on alcohol consumption recommendations, so far based on observational studies. In these first analyses we aim to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of the online intervention.

Methods: The NAMETI-Alcohol trial has 104 participants randomly assigned to abstain from alcohol or to drink it following a Mediterranean alcohol drinking pattern (moderation, preference for red wine, drinking with meals, and avoiding binge drinking) for one year. The intervention consists of an initial interview, a blog where new information is uploaded every 2 weeks, as well as a small weekly advice sent by whatsapp, depending on how adherence is going. The trial is at the midpoint of follow-up. 

Results: In the first 6 months, in the 0-alcohol group, their alcohol consumption has gone from a mean value of 18.6 g/day to 2.7 g/day. An average of 67.9% of the participants achieved abstention or a reduction in consumption of >60% during follow-up. In the Mediterranean alcohol drinking pattern (MADP) group, the average consumption went from 18.4 g/day to 10.2 g/day, and from a pattern adherence (MADP score) of 3.9 to 5 (out of 7); on average, 55.1% of participants adhered to the intervention during the first 6 months of follow-up (MADP≥ 5).

Conclusions: These early results allow us to see the feasibility of an online intervention and the effectiveness of these potential public health messages in increasing adherence to each drinking pattern. Both messages have decreased overall alcohol consumption. The decrease, as expected, has been greater in the 0 alcohol group. This group has achieved better adherence data, so it seems to be a better potential public health message than the moderate consumption typical of the Mediterranean pattern.
