(P16-039-23) Effect Of 100% Orange Juice and a Volume-Matched Sugar-Sweetened Drink on Post-Prandial and Rest-Of-Day Glycemic Response in Normal Weight Adults

Objectives: Some dietary guidelines recommend reducing free sugars from all sources and do not differentiate between sources of free sugars from 100% fruit juices and sugar-sweetened beverages. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of 100% orange juice and volume-matched orange-flavored sugar-sweetened drink (OD) compared to a water control on post-prandial and rest-of-day glycemic response in normal-weight adults.

Methods: On three separate mornings, in random order, at least five days apart, participants (n=34, age: 27.0 years ± 0.9, BMI: 24.1 ± 1.2 kg/m2) consumed isovolumetric (240 mL) treatments of 100% orange juice, OD, or water control followed by an ad libitum pizza lunch 60 min later. Post-prandial glycemic response was determined at 15 min intervals for 60 min from capillary blood samples and analyzed by a YSI 2950 biochemistry analyzer. Rest-of-day glycemic response (n=31) was assessed using a Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor.

Results: Post-prandial glycemic response over 60 min was affected by treatment (p < 0.0001), time (p < 0.0001), and treatment-by-time interaction (p < 0.0001). Blood glucose concentrations were lower after 100% orange juice compared to OD at 15-, 30-, and 45- min (p < 0.05), but not at 60 min (p > 0.05). Blood glucose iAUC (mmol•min/L) was lower after 100% orange juice (p < 0.0001) and water (p < 0.0001) compared with OD. Blood glucose iAUC corrected per gram of available carbohydrate was lower after 100% orange juice compared with OD (p < 0.0001). Rest-of-day blood glucose concentrations were lower after 100% orange juice compared with OD (p = 0.03) and water (p < 0.0001).

Conclusions: In conclusion, these results suggest that consumption of 100% orange juice compared to an orange-flavored sugar-sweetened beverage in the morning may be an effective strategy to attenuate excursions in blood glucose throughout the day in normal-weight adults.
