(P18-059-23) Maternal Nutrient Intake From Diet in Pregnancy Related to Human Colostrum Oxidant-Antioxidant Status: A Secondary Analysis

Objectives: To assess the relationship between maternal nutrient intake from diet during pregnancy and antioxidant-prooxidant components of human colostrum.

Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort of adult singleton pregnant women recruited between 2018 and 2020 from a tertiary care Baby-Friendly hospital. We included Mexican adult women whose first visit was in the first trimester of pregnancy and without a previous diagnosis of medical conditions. Women with adverse perinatal outcomes were excluded from this analysis. Trained nutritionists evaluated the diet intake participants reported taking the week before the 13th-, 20th-, 27th-, and 34th weeks of gestation by a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Human colostrum samples (1-5 ml) were collected at rooming-in at the first 5th days postpartum and stored at −80 °C until analysis. Standardized personnel in oxidant-antioxidant biomarkers measurements determined reactive oxygen species (ROS) (malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipohydroxyperoxides (LPH)) and antioxidant capacity in human colostrum using spectrophotometry and the CUPRAC method, respectively.

Results: We obtained a colostrum sample from n=22 (59.4%) cohort participants. Of these women, 13 (59%) had a low/normal weight, and nine (41%) had overweight/obesity before pregnancy. Significant correlations were observed between nutrient intakes at 20 gestation weeks with ROS (p < 0.05). For both groups, selenium was positively correlated with LPH (low/normal weight: r= 0.59; overweight/obesity: r=0.61). In women with low/normal weight, vitamin E was positively correlated with LPH (r= 0.61) and MDA (r=0.65). On the contrary, a negative correlation was observed between vitamin E and MDA (r=-0.63) in women with overweight/obesity. In addition, in the latter group, beta-carotene (mg/d) was negatively correlated with MDA (r= -0.60), and vitamin A and protein positively correlated with LPH (r=0.65, r=0.60, respectively).

Conclusions: The relationship between maternal nutrient intake from diet and human colostrum oxidant-antioxidant status appears to differ according to weeks of pregnancy and BMI before pregnancy.
