(P22-009-23) Protocol for a Formative Research Study To Understand How To Reduce Breastfeeding Inequities Among Latine Families Living in the U.S.-Mexico Border Region of Arizona

Objectives: The period of infancy and early childhood is widely recognized as a critical window for growth and development. Optimal infant and young child feeding practices promote physical health and lay a foundation for cognitive and academic achievement. Despite the well-documented benefits of breastfeeding, current breastfeeding practices lag behind national public health goals, and disparities in breastfeeding practices persist in the United States. Disparities in breastfeeding practices can be seen among families living in a rural county on the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona, where declines in exclusive breastfeeding occur in early infancy. The objective of this research is to characterize breastfeeding intent and describe the facilitators and barriers to breastfeeding experienced by Latine birthing parents in a rural county on the U.S.-Mexico border of Arizona.

Methods: Longitudinal, semi-structured interviews will be conducted with 25 pregnant Latine participants over 18 years of age at three time points: during their third trimester of pregnancy, within three weeks postpartum, and two months postpartum. Trained interviewers, bilingual in Spanish and English, will conduct these semi-structured interviews. Eligible pregnant participants will be recruited from clinics during their third trimester. The first semi-structured interview will include a socio-demographic questionnaire to provide additional background information on each participant. Key informant interviews will also be conducted with 25 healthcare and nutrition professionals, including OB/GYNs, Nurse-Midwives, Pediatricians, Certified Lactation Consultants, WIC staff, and Health Start Program staff. Data will be analyzed iteratively using inductive and deductive coding to identify emergent themes across participants over time.

Conclusions: This research intends to improve our understanding of the support system for breastfeeding and the barriers Latine birthing parents experience accessing or participating in breastfeeding support services. The goal of this formative research is to provide actionable recommendations to health and nutrition service providers in the U.S.-Mexico border region of Arizona to support evidence-based, culturally appropriate breastfeeding programs for Latine birthing parents.
