(P13-008-23) Nutrition Related Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes Among Oncologists and Patients: A Qualitative Study To Inform Training Interventions

Objectives: The purpose of this study was 1) to better understand the baseline knowledge that a broad population of cancer patients have related to nutrition and its role in supporting health outcomes; 2) to assess oncologists’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to nutrition. The results of this study are being used to develop training material for clinicians and education to improve lifestyle decisions among cancer patients.

Methods: A scoping review of literature related to the availability of nutrition training for oncologists (i.e., residency or fellowship) was done prior to qualitative data collection. The results of this review informed our study design and research questions. Data was collected from two stakeholder groups: 1) cancer patients who were undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and/or immunotherapy as part of their plan of care and 2) clinical oncologists. Data was collected through a questionnaire to capture demographic data and ensure participant eligibility and one-on-one interviews with participants. 

Results: Data analysis is occurring concurrently with data collection. Data collection will continue through April 2023 and so this abstract contains preliminary data with final results of the study being available in June 2023. Our scoping review confirmed that oncologists rarely receive even baseline nutrition education during their graduate training. Initial coding of the data affirms that cancer patients rarely enter treatment with significant education in nutrition and that they look for much of their knowledge through conversations with their clinicians and, failing this, through internet searches.

Conclusions: Comprehensive care requires an interprofessional approach including perspectives from oncologists, patients, caregivers, and a diverse array of health professionals including experts in nutrition. While interprofessional care is essential, oncologists should receive more substantial training in functional nutrition to address the needs of their patients across a continuum of care. This study will present training recommendations and educational programs.
