Objectives: Malnutrition is a common medical issue among cancer patients. This prospective study aimed to investigate the nutritional status of newly diagnosed gastric cancer patients who receive nutritional care intervention during the entire surgery period, including preoperative, postoperative, and post-discharge periods.

Methods: The inclusion criteria were newly diagnosed gastric cancer patients aged 20 or above, excluding those with HIV, distant metastasis, or receiving other cancer treatments. Nutritional assessment, PG-SGA evaluation, and nutritional therapy plan were performed by a registered dietitian before and after surgery. Patients were followed up at the nutrition clinic at 3 and 6 months after discharge, where the PG-SGA evaluation was conducted, and nutritional intervention was provided. Food intake, weight change, and related biochemical data were observed. All participants signed informed consent forms.

Results: The study was conducted from January 2021 to December 2022, with a total of 31 participants, 51.6% male, and the median age was 60. Compared with the preoperative period, there was no significant difference in calorie and protein intake 6 months after surgery, and the recommended intake of 90% or more was achieved. Although there was a significant decrease in weight 3 and 6 months after surgery, there was no significant difference in weight between 6 months and 3 months after surgery (P=0.929). Albumin, hemoglobin, iron, and TIBC showed significant increases. PG-SGA and NLR showed a significant decrease (p=0.002/0.004). There was a "moderate correlation" between preoperative calorie intake (Kcal) and preoperative weight and weight 3 months after surgery.

Conclusions: Nutritional intervention can help patients recover their calorie and protein intake to the preoperative level 6 months after surgery, and weight no longer declines after 3 months postoperatively. Early nutritional screening, assessment, and proactive nutritional intervention can reduce the risk of malnutrition among gastric cancer patients.
