Objectives: The USDA Food Patterns Equivalents Database (FPED) converts the foods and beverages in the USDA Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) to the 37 Food Patterns (FP) components. The objective of this research is to develop an FPED to be used with the What We Eat in America (WWEIA), National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-March 2020 Prepandemic data. The WWEIA, NHANES 2017-March 2020 is a unique data release that combines the 2017-2018 survey cycle with a partially collected 2019-2020 cycle due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: FNDDS is developed for each 2-year release of WWEIA, NHANES. In turn, an FPED is developed for each FNDDS release. Because respondents and their intake records are not identified between the combined 2017-2018 and 2019-March 2020 survey cycles, an FPED 2019-2020 was not feasible for analysis. In order to analyze dietary intakes in WWEIA, NHANES 2017-March 2020 by the FP components, the 361 new foods in FNDDS 2019-2020 were linked to one or more foods in FNDDS 2017-2018 to calculate FP components based on FPED 2017-2018. New foods were either linked to a similar food in FNDDS 2017-2018, or if there was not a similar food, they were proportionally linked to multiple foods to best represent the ingredients and amounts of the new food.

Results: Of the 361 new foods in FNDDS 2019-2020, about 60% were linked to a similar food in FNDDS 2017-2018. The remaining 40% were proportionally linked to 2-4 foods. FP components and equivalent amounts were calculated based on FPED 2017-2018 to create the FPED for Use with WWEIA, NHANES 2017-March 2020 Prepandemic. Mean amounts of FP equivalents consumed per individual were calculated by demographics including age/gender, race/ethnicity, and income as percent of poverty level for WWEIA, NHANES 2017-March 2020.

Conclusions: FPED for Use with WWEIA, NHANES 2017-March 2020 Prepandemic will be released to the public in spring 2023 on the FSRG website https://www.ars.usda.gov/nea/bhnrc/fsrg. This FPED allows for the evaluation of dietary intakes in WWEIA, NHANES 2017-March 2020 dataset with respect to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommendations.
