(P15-016-23) The Effects of Purslane Consumption on Blood Pressure and Anthropometric Indices: A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-Analysis

Objectives: Purslane consumption may improve adults' anthropometric measurements and blood pressure, according to some studies. However, some of the study results are controversial. Our aim was to conduct a meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of purslane consumption on body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP).

Methods: Databases including PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Library and Web of Science were searched to retrieve RCTs examining the effect of purslane consumption on anthropometric indices and blood pressure in adults until Sep 2022. The meta‐analysis was carried out using a random‐effects model. I² index was used to evaluate the heterogeneity of RCTs.

Results: Among the initial 611 studies that were identified from searching electronic databases, 7 RCTs involving 425 participants (212 cases and 213 controls) were included for data analyses. The results of random-effects modelling demonstrated that purslane consumption significantly reduced body weight (BW) (p < 0.001), body mass index (BMI) (p=0.017) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) (0.002). However, purslane consumption did not affect waist circumference (WC) (p=0.249), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (p=0.697).

Conclusions: This study suggests that purslane consumption may significantly improve anthropometric indices and blood pressure in adults.
