(P19-001-23) Association of Pork (All Pork, Fresh Pork and Processed Pork) Consumption With Nutrient Adequacy in US Children (2–18 Years) and Adults (19+ Years)

Objectives: To assess current intake of pork and its association with nutrient adequacy in US children and adults using NHANES 2011-2018.

Methods: 24-hour dietary recall (day 1) data from children age 2-18 years (N=10,913) and adults age 19+ years (N=19,766) participating in NHANES 2011-2018 were used to access intake of all pork (AP), fresh pork (FP) and processed pork (PP). Usual intake of nutrients was determined using the National Cancer Institute method and the percent of population with intake below the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR), or above the Adequate Intake (AI) for each nutrient was determined for pork consumers and non-consumers. Significant differences (P < 0.05) between pork consumers and non-consumers were assessed via t-tests.

Results: Children age 2-18 years: About 52, 15 and 45% were consumers of AP, FP and PP, respectively with a mean intake of 47, 60 and 38 g/day, respectively. A higher proportion of children met the nutrients requirements for copper (3-4%), potassium (6-10%), zinc (5-8%), thiamin (2-3%) and choline (8-9%) among consumers of AP, FP and PP. Consumers of AP and PP had lower percentages < EAR for calcium (5-8%), iron (2%), phosphorus (8-9%), riboflavin (1-2%) and vitamin B12 (2%). Consumers of FP had lower percentages < EAR for magnesium (4%), vitamin B6 (2%), and vitamin C (11%) and a higher percentage < EAR for calcium (6%).

Adults age 19+ years: About 59, 20 and 49% were consumers AP, FP and PP, respectively with a mean intake of 61, 77 and 48 g/day, respectively. A higher proportion of adults met the nutrients requirements for copper (2-5%), iron (2-4%), potassium (4-5%), zinc (5-12%), thiamin (8-12%), riboflavin (1-4%), niacin (1-3%), vitamin B6 (5-6%) and choline (5-6%) among consumers of AP, FP and PP. Consumers of AP and PP had lower percentages < EAR for calcium (6-11%), folate (3-4%) and vitamin B12 (5%). Consumers of PP had lower percentages < EAR vitamin A (5%). However, consumers of AP and PP had a higher proportion of adults < EAR for vitamin D (2-3%); consumers of AP and FP had a higher proportion of adults < EAR for vitamin E (4-5%) and consumers of FP had a higher proportion of adults < EAR and for calcium (8%) and vitamin A (8%).

Conclusions: Pork intake was associated with lower percentages below the EAR and higher percentages above the AI in US children (2-18 years) and adults (19+ years) for certain key nutrients.
