(P24-017-23) Diet Quality and High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein on Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate Among United States Adults: A Secondary Data Analysis

Objectives: Examine the relationship between high sensitivity c-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and diet quality (DQ) on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) among U.S. adults

Methods: A cross-sectional secondary data analysis study was conducted among a representative sample of civilian noninstitutionalized U.S. population. Included participants were those aged 19 years and older, had 2–24-hour recalls, hs-CRP, and serum creatinine to calculate eGFR. A total of 8,825 adults were included in the analysis. DQ was determined through calculation of the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) using the 24-hour recalls. Multivariable linear regressions examined the relationship independently and the interaction between DQ and hs-CRP on eGFR, after adjustment for age, race/ethnicity, hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus (DM), and cardiovascular disease (CVD). All analyses were performed in SAS version 9.4 with a statistical significance of p< 0.05.

Results: Overall, there was a statistically significant negative interaction effect between HEI scores (M=53.15, SD=13.79) and hs-CRP (M=4.15, SD=7.82) on eGFR (M=94.90, SD=21.45, p=0.02). Of the factors that influenced this relationship, a negative influence was seen with age, identifying as non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, self-reporting a diagnosis of HTN or CVD on eGFR (p < 0.00). Whereas a positive influence was observed with identifying as Mexican American on eGFR (p < 0.00).

Conclusions: Reduced kidney function was observed with a low overall DQ and elevated hs-CRP, that was influenced by age, race, HTN, and CVD. Efforts to improve dietary intake among the general population to reduce inflammation and improve kidney function is necessary.
