(P24-135-23) Associations of Tea and Coffee Consumption With Dysmenorrhea Among Reproductive-Age Women

Objectives: Dysmenorrhea is a prevalent health issue among reproductive-age women that can significantly reduce their quality of life and limit their social activities. Tea and coffee consumption have been hypothesized to be associated with dysmenorrhea, but the results from previous studies are inconsistent. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the associations between tea and coffee consumption and dysmenorrhea among reproductive-age women in Beijing, China.

Methods: A total of 1247 women who participated in health screening at six community health service centers in Beijing from September to November 2021 were included in this study. The participants' tea and coffee consumption was measured using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and dysmenorrhea severity was assessed using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS). Multinomial logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between tea and coffee consumption and dysmenorrhea, while controlling for demographic factors and other relevant variables.

Results: The prevalence of dysmenorrhea among the participants was 92.9%, with 69.0%, 21.7%, and 2.2% of them reporting mild, moderate, and severe dysmenorrhea, respectively. Regular consumption of coffee (more than one cup/bottle per day) was positively associated with the prevalence of dysmenorrhea, with adjusted odds ratios (aOR) of 1.97 (95% CI 1.03 to 3.79) and 3.27 (95% CI 1.59 to 6.73) for mild and moderate-to-severe dysmenorrhea, respectively. Similarly, regular intake of green tea and bubble tea was positively associated with the prevalence of moderate-to-severe dysmenorrhea, with aORs of 3.02 (95% CI 1.31 to 6.96) and 2.91 (95% CI 1.31 to 6.43), respectively. Occasional coffee consumption was also associated with moderate-to-severe dysmenorrhea, with an aOR of 2.19 (95% CI 1.20 to 3.99), while occasional intake of green tea and bubble tea had no significant association with dysmenorrhea. No significant association was observed between red tea or flower tea consumption with dysmenorrhea.

Conclusions: The findings suggest that regular coffee and tea consumption may be associated with a higher prevalence of dysmenorrhea among reproductive-age women in Beijing, China.
