(P27-005-23) A Dietary Supplement Containing Whole Coffee Cherry Extract and Phosphatidylserine Provides Improved Cognition in a Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial

Objectives: With an aging population, concern for ones’ health extends to their cognitive capacity. The process of cognition includes memory, learning and thought processing. The objective of this trial was to determine whether a dietary supplement containing whole coffee cherry extract and phosphatidylserine, known as Neuriva® supports cognitive function in healthy adults (40-65 years) with self-reported memory problems.

Methods: Participants were provided with the Neuriva supplement or a placebo for 42 days. Baseline and day 42 cognitive assessments were executed using the Computerized Mental Performance Assessment System (COMPASS), the Everyday Memory Questionnaire (EMQ) and the Go/No-Go Tests. COMPASS test outcomes were framed against key areas of cognition, including memory, accuracy, focus and concentration.

Results: A total of 128 individuals completed the trial and were included in the PP analysis. Significant improvements due to Neuriva supplementation were found in tests which support each area of cognition. With significant differences between the Neuriva and placebo group found in individual tests laddering to; Memory (5/21); Focus and Concentration (4/13), Accuracy (3/13) and Learning (1/2). A few of the individual tests demonstrating significance includes Overall Accuracy (p=0.024), "Yes" Accuracy (p=0.01), "correct" Reaction time (p=0.031) and "Yes" reaction time (p=0.016) all of which are a proxy for working memory. No significant effects were found EMQ or Go-No Go tests.

Conclusions: Data from this trial suggest that Neuriva supplementation was safe, tolerable, and effective at supporting core areas of cognition following a supplementation regimen of 42 days in healthy older adults with self-reported memory problems.
