(P23-022-23) Exploring Associations Between Sugar Consumption and Complete Lipid Profiles in Older Men

Objectives: According to the CDC, Dyslipidemia affects approximately 53% of the US adult population and is characterized by abnormal lipid profiles. Although dyslipidemia may seem only mildly threatening, is has a high likelihood of progressing into Atherosclerosis and even further into full blown CVD. Interventions focus on alleviating abnormal TC, TG, LDL-C, and HDL-C levels through diet modifications. One commonly vilified factor, sugar intake, is a favorite scapegoat. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the associations between daily sugar intake and complete lipid profiles in older men.

Methods: Forty-four older males (Ages 55-80) with a BMI value of 18 - 40 kg/m2 were recruited. Data collection included diet tracking using a 3-day food log, and a fasting venous blood draw. Serum was used to compile complete lipid profiles employing the Piccolo Xpress® Chemistry analyzer. Participants were instructed to maintain their routine diet while keeping a record of their dietary intake over three days. Food log data was analyzed using ESHA’s Food Processor® software. Statistical analysis was conducted using SAS®, and significance level was defined as having a P value < 0.05.

Results: Lipid profiles included analysis for TC, HDL-c, TG, nHDLc, and LDL. Analysis of the 3-day food logs showed that participant’s daily total daily sugar consumption varied greatly from 10.29g/d up to 219.82g/d (Mean ± SD: 99.41 ± 49.40). Statistical analysis revealed no significant correlations between sugar consumption and TC (P=0.2752), HDL-c (P=0.3935), TG (P= 0.1846), nHDLc (P = 0.3933), and LDL (P = 0.5099).

Conclusions: Study findings indicate that daily sugar consumption had no correlation with complete lipid profiles in older men. While we may not be able to completely disentangle sugar consumption with all poor health outcomes, it does help us to remember that one vilified dietary factor cannot shoulder all the blame. Focusing on finding multifaceted interventions should be the focus of modernized health care as we move forward into the space of personalized medicine.
