(P23-038-23) Lifestyle Medicine for Healthy Ageing: A 10-Week Community-Based Intervention Program Reduces Oxidative Stress Biomarkers & Mitigates Chronic Disease Risk in German Adults

Objectives: Oxidative stress (OS) is a major contributor to the development of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 10-week community-based lifestyle intervention program on oxidative stress biomarkers in the German population.

Methods: A total of 195 adults (aged 18-65 years) were assigned to the intervention group (n=115) and the control group (n=80). The intervention group participated in a 10-week community-based lifestyle program that included empowering the individuals with scientific based knowledge on the four important pillars of heath: nutritional health, physical health, mental health and social health. The control group received no intervention. Blood samples were collected at baseline and at the end of the 10-week intervention period to measure biomarkers of oxidative stress, including malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and catalase enzyme (CAT).

Results: The results revealed that the community-based lifestyle intervention program significantly reduced oxidative stress biomarkers in adults. Specifically, the intervention group showed significantly lower levels of MDA (p < 0.01) and higher levels of SOD (p < 0.05), GSH (p < 0.01), and TAC (p < 0.05) compared to both baseline and the control group at the end of the 10-week period, while catalase enzyme showed no significant change.

Conclusions: These findings suggest that the lifestyle intervention program had a positive impact on reducing oxidative stress and may be a promising approach to reducing the risk of chronic diseases associated with oxidative stress. This study underscores the importance of community-based lifestyle interventions in promoting healthy ageing and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
