(P23-072-23) Associations Between Hemodynamic Parameters and Sleep Quality in Physically Active Older Adults With Overweight or Obesity

Objectives: To investigate the associations between hemodynamic parameters and sleep quality in physically active older adults with overweight or obesity.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 13 males and 20 females aged 50 – 64 years (mean = 57.5, SD = 3.8) with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 – 35 kg/m2 (mean = 29.4, SD = 3.2) who participated in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity three times per week were recruited. Hemodynamic parameters including resting blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) were measured. Pulse pressure (PP) was calculated by subtracting systolic BP (SBP) from diastolic BP (DBP), whereas mean arterial pressure (MAP) was estimated from the sum of DBP and 1/3 of PP. Additionally, pulse wave analyses were conducted to assess arterial stiffness in participants. In addition to completing the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) survey, participants’ sleep data were collected using accelerometers. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to investigate the associations between hemodynamic parameters, arterial stiffness, and sleep quality. P-value < 0.05 was considered significant.

Results: After controlling for covariates (sex, age, and BMI), elevated SBP, MAP, and PP were significantly associated with increased arterial stiffness measures including augmentation (Aug), augmentation index (AIx), and aortic augmentation index (AoAIx). A 10-mmHg reduction in SBP was associated with a decrease in Aug, AIx, and AoAIx of 3 mmHg, 2.3%, and 2.4%, respectively. DBP and HR were not significantly associated with arterial stiffness. No significant associations were observed between hemodynamic parameters and sleep quality, including PSQI score, sleep efficiency, and wake after sleep onset. Sleep quality was also not associated with arterial stiffness in this study.

Conclusions: Maintaining a normal BP may slow down the stiffening of large arteries in older adults. Future studies should examine the relationships between BP, sleep quality, and other parameters of arterial stiffness in the context of physical activity or dietary interventions known to improve these conditions.
