(P29-041-23) Magnesium Intake Is Associated With Lower Prevalence of Circadian Syndrome Among US Adults Attending NHANES 2005–2016

Objectives: Circadian Syndrome (CircS), which adds circadian rhythm disturbances and depression to the classical metabolic syndrome (MetS) conditions, has been shown to be a better predictor for CVD than MetS. While magnesium has been linked to both circadian rhythm disturbances and depression, the association between dietary intake and CircS has not been studied. We aimed to investigate the association between magnesium dietary intake and CircS.

Methods: Data from 10,486 adults aged 20 years and above years who attended the 2005-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were analyzed. Nutrient intake including magnesium was assessed using two days 24 hours recall. MetS was defined using the harmonized criteria, while CircS was based on the components of MetS plus short sleep and depression. The cut-off for CircS was set as ≥ 4 components. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association.

Results: The mean age of the participants was 50.3(SD 17.6) years. The prevalence of CircS was 41.3% in the sample and decreased from 47.3% in the first quartile of magnesium intake to 35.2% in the highest quartile. A high intake of magnesium was associated with a lower prevalence of CircS. In the multivariable logistic model adjusting for age, gender, ethnicity, energy intake, education and lifestyle factors, across the quartiles of magnesium intake, the odds ratios (ORs) (95%CI) for CircS were: 1.00, 0.80 (0.68-0.95), 0.75 (0.64-0.87), and 0.61 (0.49-0.76) (p trend < 0.001), respectively. The association remained significant after further adjusting for the healthy eating index. There was no significant interaction of magnesium intake with race, gender, smoking, alcohol drinking and physical activity in relation to CircS.

Conclusions: Magnesium intake was inversely associated with CircS among adults in the USA. CircS has been implicated in many chronic conditions. Understanding the role of magnesium in CircS may shed light on future targeted interventions. Yet, additional studies are warranted to elucidate the relation of diet with CircS.
