(P30-028-23) Two-Week Consumption of A1/A2 Milk Results in Significantly More Fecal Urgency Than A2 Milk in Lactose Maldigesters

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine if chronic daily consumption of two cups of milk containing only A2 beta-casein resulted in less symptoms of intolerance, lower inflammatory markers and altered glutathione levels, as compared to milk containing both A1 and A2 beta-casein in lactose maldigesters.

Methods: Ten subjects consumed 250 ml of A1/A2 milk or A2 milk twice per day with meals for two weeks and rated their symptoms on a daily basis. A1/A2 milk contained 75 percent A1 beta-casein and 25 percent A2 beta-casein and A2 milk contained 100 percent A2 beta-casein. Hydrogen in breath (as a measure of lactose maldigestion) and inflammatory markers in serum were measured on the 15^th day after a challenge A1/A2 milk or A2 milk dose of 0.5 g lactose per kg body weight. We are continuing to enroll subjects in the study to reach n=20, based on a power calculation for intolerance symptoms.

Results: Preliminary results indicate that daily fecal urgency was significantly higher during consumption of A1/A2 milk for two weeks than A2 milk (p=0.033, n=10). Hydrogen and inflammatory markers measured during the milk challenge at the end of the two-week period were not different: p=0.334 for hydrogen (n=9), p=0.367 for IgG1 (n=10) and p=0.159 for hsCRP (n=10) . The concentration of antioxidant glutathione (p=0.289, n=10) was also not different due to A2 milk. The findings will likely change as the sample size increases.

Conclusions: Daily consumption of A2 milk resulted in less fecal urgency than A1/A2 milk over two-week period in lactose maldigesters.
