Objectives: To observe the effect of ultrafiltration milk supplementation on body composition, biochemical indexes and aerobic performance in male race walkers during 4-week routine training.

Methods: Sixteen elite male race walkers were recruited and randomly assigned to ultrafiltration milk supplementation group (UM, 8% protein, n=8) and conventional milk supplementation group (CM, 3% protein, n=8). Participants were asked to drink the assigned milk at noon (11:00 a.m.) and at night (9:00 p.m.) 250 mL of each，and a regular diet required for 4 weeks. Training load was monitored during training, gas exchange analysis, body composition, blood biochemical indexes and amino acid profile were tested before and after intervention. The elbow subcutaneous veinous blood sample were collected on the testing day morning. Paired student T test was used for testing within group differences, and independent student T test for testing between group differences.

Results: Mean HRmax (160.22 ± 3.2 bpm) was matched between groups for the entire 4-week routine training. Lean body mass was significantly improved in the UM group (UM vs CM, 56.64 ± 3.25kg vs 54.90 ± 2.93kg, P< 0.05). For the antioxidant measuring, MDA level was found significantly raised in UM group after intervention (UM vs CM, 39.33±15.38 nmol/ml vs 94.85±17.23 nmol/ml, P< 0.05). After intervention, the concentration of glutamate (UM vs CM, 16.32 ± 1.01 μg/ml vs 12.95 ± 1.04 μg/ml, P< 0.05) and isoleucine (UM vs CM, 32.33 ± 7.63 μg/ml vs 15.40 ± 1.85 μg/ml, P< 0.05) were significantly improved in UM group. After intervention, at peak VO2, VE (L/min) and VO2 (L/min) in CM group increased by 4.02% and 4.58% (vs pre-intervention, respectively), and the UM group increased by 7.46% and 6.07%, respectively. No significant difference of gas exchange indexes between groups was found at neither VT nor peak VO2 timepoints of measurement.

Conclusions: UM supplementation can help improve body lean mass, and be of help in enhancing blood antioxidant capacity. Drinking UM may help race walkers promote protein synthesis through up-regulating serum glutamate and isoleucine. Improvement of aerobic exercise capacity wasn’t significantly different between groups, which is the beneficial effect from routine training.
